Mechanical Engineer (Modeling and Testing)

​

Job description:

Seattle-based Oscilla Power, Inc. (OPI) has an exciting opportunity for a Modeling and Testing Engineer to join a small but growing team working on the commercialization of marine energy for variety of applications including defense and grid-scale power. OPI is developing technology to harness energy from ocean waves at different scales and is executing projects aimed at demonstrating and validating its technology.

A core facet of OPI's work is developing and validating numerical models of our wave energy converters, and the successful hire would be expected to lead tasks relating to this. Further, OPI has a number of ongoing projects which include testing both in the laboratory and at sea, with significant instrumentation and data collection. The successful hire would be expected to assist with test planning, configuration, and ongoing data collection/analysis activities.

We are looking for a motivated engineer who has a fundamental grasp of fluid mechanics/hydrodynamics. An ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work as an individual contributor on numerical modeling tasks as well as collaborate with outside consultants with these activities. Applicants should also be comfortable with working in a small team to solve challenging problems related to wave energy devices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute tasks related to numerical modeling of wave energy systems at different scales.

  • Work closely with external consultants with relevant experience and coordinate their effort to meet OPI’s goals.

  • Work closely with other engineers/technicians at Oscilla Power to accomplish project goals related to testing, data analysis and model validation.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Applicants must be US citizens or US Permanent Residents.

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Marine/Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, or an associated field.

  • Comprehensive understanding of modeling either wave energy converters, submersible vehicles, or surface vessels.

  • Extensive experience with data processing/analysis and have excellent MATLAB skills.

  • Experience with hydrodynamic modeling software, and a familiarity with software such as Orcaflex, ProteusDS, WEC-Sim (Wave Energy Converter SIMulator), WAMIT, NEMOH

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year

Electrical/Electronics Systems Engineer

​

Job description:

Seattle-based Oscilla Power, Inc. (OPI) has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineer to join a small but growing team working on the commercialization of marine energy for grid and defense applications. OPI is developing technology to harness energy from ocean waves at different scales and is executing projects aimed at demonstrating and validating its technology.

​

​We are looking for a team member who is interested in helping to develop novel electrical/electronics solutions for energy systems. This position will involve the continued development and improvement of the electrical systems for OPI’s wave energy systems and will ultimately involve taking ownership of specific multidisciplinary projects. This position will involve both the development of innovative concepts and translating those ideas into detailed schematics and test-bench prototypes. The successful candidate will be expected to effectively work with engineers from other disciplines to help solve interesting problems, develop specifications, and manage work and deliverables.

​

​Oscilla Power’s systems involve the conversion of physical motion to useful electric power for applications ranging from small-scale battery recharging to grid-scale and the successful applicant will have demonstrated experience with similar electrical applications. They will be expected to work within a small team and manage project activities towards specific design objectives. A positive attitude to proactively identify challenges and develop innovative solutions that can make a substantive impact on the cost and performance is a must.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of complex electrical/electronic components for marine energy systems.

  • Develop and maintain electrical documentation, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, electrical schematics, logic diagrams, and panel layouts.

  • Develop specifications and functional descriptions for components and subsystems.

  • Oversee the programming and configuration of PLCs, Motor Drives (VFDs), Generators, and motion control systems by internal staff and external contractors, ensuring adherence to standards, project specifications, and timelines.

  • Act as the internal subject matter expert for the electrical systems relating to Oscilla Power’s technology implementation, including, but not exclusively limited to, PLCs, HMI, Inverters, VFD drives, generators, motors, lighting, power distribution, system integration, sensors, and electro-mechanical devices.

  • Interface with contractors and technicians to successfully install various projects and lead troubleshooting efforts.

Required skills & experience:

  • Applicant must be a US citizen or US Permanent Resident.

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in a relevant position such as industrial automation, motion control systems, or utilities, with a strong focus on power systems. Experience requirements can be relaxed for higher degrees.

  • Extensive experience creating and interpreting Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) documentation

  • Demonstrated expertise with PLCs, VFDs, and motion control systems, Siemens preferred (SINAMICS, STARTER, PROFINET), although experience with other major vendors (Rockwell Automation, Omron, Beckhoff, Mitsubishi Electric) is also acceptable.

  • Proficiency in creating and interpreting electrical one-line and three-line diagrams.

  • Strong understanding of MATLAB Simulink and Simscape for power systems and grid integration modeling.

  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant codes and standards (UL, NEC, etc.) pertaining to wire sizing, fuse sizing, and panel design.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience working on systems for the marine environment would be advantageous.

​

Pay: $120,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
